Former CEO of Twitter* will create a decentralized social network that will challenge Elon Musk

Social network from Bluesky in the future can become a replacement for Twitter*.

Bluesky plans to create a decentralized version of Twitter* protected from Elon Musk.

Bluesky is an initiative created by a former CEO Twitter Jack Dorsey. It was created before Musk bought the platform. The aim of the Bluesky contributors is to create an open source decentralized social media protocol.

Right now, the Bluesky interface is copying Twitter, but the key difference is the use of a default chronological feed, which the user can switch to algorithmic.

At the moment, Bluesky lags behind Twitter in terms of many features, such as exporting account data. Bluesky is based on the AT protocol, which is similar to ActivityPub, the decentralized protocol at Mastodon. The protocol will allow users to manage their own algorithms.

By words Bluesky CEO Jay Graber, the number of Bluesky users has reached 20,000 people – these users have previously signed up on a waiting list. In the future, Bluesky will likely compete with Mastodon software and the Dorsey-funded decentralized social network protocol Nostr. The number of Mastodon accounts in March passed the mark of 10 million.

Graber notes that the protocol contains components that are not in the Mastodon ecosystem – the ability to transfer an account, custom curation and moderation. Now the Bluesky developers are focusing on refining their approach and scaling. As Graber explained, even if the Bluesky application will block content or user accounts, they will be able to transfer their profile to another client.

* the social network is prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation.
