June 19 FreeBSD operating system celebrated 30 years of existence. This date is counted from the creation of the 4.3BSD fork based on an unofficial fix set for 386BSD which was intended to develop a fast, stable, and secure operating system for machines with i386 processors.

The FreeBSD project is based on the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) code. According to the developers, they chose between such names as FreeBSD, BSDFree86 and Free86BSD. In the end, they settled on FreeBSD. The first FreeBSD 1.0 release was made in November 1993 from 4.3BSD-Lite ‘Net/2’ and 386BSD 0.1. Version available now FreeBSD 13.2 .

FreeBSD has documentation in multiple languages, allowing you to share your knowledge and experience with a large number of developers around the world. Past and current versions of FreeBSD have many additional tools and libraries that have been constantly improved over the years.

The project has a long history, starting with Timeshare OS in 1962, then Multics in 1964 and Unics (Uniplexed Information and Computing Service) in 1969, and finally 1BSD as extensions to Unix 6 in 1978.

One of the key factors behind FreeBSD’s 30-year success is the BSD license (Berkeley Software Distribution license), an open source license that allows software to be freely distributed.

In December 2022, the FreeBSD team released an urgent security patch to address critical error in the ping program which has been present in the code of this popular tool since 1998.
