General Dynamics Electric Boat received a contract to build two Virginia-class nuclear submarines at once. The deal was announced on the official website of the US Department of Defense.
What is known
The deal amounted to $ 1.076 billion. The funds were allocated for the purchase of hull materials and main equipment for nuclear submarines SSN 812 and SSN 813. Work under the contract will be completed by September 2033.
Submarines of the Virginia class are designed with the requirements of the 21st century in mind. They can carry torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles. Some submarines will receive hypersonic missiles at the end of this decade.

The submarines are 114.9 meters long, up to 10.5 meters wide and have a displacement of 7,800 tons. The speed of the submarine is more than 60 km/h. On average, each submarine costs the US Navy more than $2 billion.
