How to disable or remove Reading List from Google Chrome

Google took care of saving Chrome browser one of the best in terms of both efficiency and functionality. In one of its iterations earlier this year, Google added Reading List capability to its browser window. They combined it with the Bookmarks option to make it easier for people to save web pages they want to read later. While some of you may find it useful to separate links that you want to return to, others may think of it as an unnecessary feature. In this article, we will discuss how to disable or even completely remove ‘Add to Reading List‘option from Google Chrome.

Personally, I find the Reading List to be a handy addition. Bookmarks can be very messy for anyone viewing a lot of different materials, such as a student or a working professional, and can get lost or hard to find as they read. To add a link to your Reading List, you just need to click the star icon in the address bar and select Add to Reading List. While this makes it easier to save your bookmarks, it’s an extra step, so here’s how you can get rid of it.

How to remove Reading List option from Google Chrome

There are 3 ways you can turn off or stop viewing your reading list and add to reading list option in Google Chrome. We will discuss all three.

1]Remove Reading List from Google Settings

At the top, under the address bar in Google Chrome, is the bookmarks bar. This is where your first few bookmarked links are, and on the right-hand corner is your reading list. If you click on it, you will be able to see all the links that you have previously added to the list. If you want to remove this option from the browser window, here’s how to do it.

  • Open Google Chrome
  • Right click anywhere in the bookmarks bar
  • Find the option “Show list of readings”. If there is a check mark next to it, click on it and the Reading List option will disappear.

Reverting this option is just as easy. Click the bookmark bar again and select Show List of Readings. The option will return immediately.

2]Disable “Add to Reading List” option in Google Chrome.

If you want to get rid of the Add to Reading List option so you can add additional web pages to your existing Reading List, here are the steps you need to follow.

  • Open Google Chrome
  • In the address bar, paste the following:
  • You will see the following two preferences here:
    • Temporarily not expired M94 flags.
    • Temporarily unused M95 flags
  • Open the dropdown next to them and select Enabled. If you don’t see these options right away, enter “Temporarily” in the Search Flags search bar.
  • After making these changes, you will see the option to restart Chrome.

Do this, and when Chrome restarts, you will see the Add Reading List option is grayed out.

3]Remove the “Add to Reading List” option from Google Chrome.

If you want to completely remove the Add Reading List option and only open the Bookmarks setting every time you click on the star icon, there is a very simple process for that as well.

  • Open Chrome and paste the following into the address bar:
  • A flag titled Reading List will appear on your screen with the same dropdown as in the above process.
  • Open it and select disabled
  • Restart using the suggested prompt and wait for the Chrome window to open.

Now, every time you click on the star icon, the link is only registered as a bookmark, effectively removing the ability to add it to the Reading List.

What’s the difference between reading lists and bookmarks?

There is technically no real difference between a link in your bookmarks and one that you add to your reading list. A reading list is just a special list where you can place all the links you want to read. As I mentioned earlier, this can be very helpful for students and people who constantly read materials on the Internet for their work.

We hope this post helped you understand what a reading list is in Chrome and decide if you need this feature in your computer’s browser.
