How to enable or disable Live Preview in Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Live Preview helps you see changes to your document, spreadsheet, or presentation before you apply them. If it’s disabled in Office applications, you can follow this guide to enable or disable Live Preview in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint using the built-in Settings, Local Group Policy Editoras well as Registry Editor.

Before you get started, you should know two things:

  • We have shown the steps for Microsoft Excel here. However, you can follow the same steps for other Office applications such as Word and PowerPoint. For your convenience, we have mentioned registry and group policy paths for other applications.
  • If you want to use the GPEDIT method, you must download the Administrative Templates for Office.

To enable or disable Live Preview in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, follow these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Excel on your computer.
  2. go to File > Options.

  5. Uncheck the box to disable.
  6. Press Ok button.

To enable or disable Preview in Word, Excel, PowerPoint using Group Policy, follow these steps:

  1. press Win+R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type gpedit.msc and press To come in button.
  3. Switch to Excel Options > General in User configuration.
  4. Double click on Enable live preview parameter.
  5. Select Included option to enable.
  6. Select Defective option to disable.
  7. Press Ok button.

Let’s take a look at these steps in detail.

First you need to open the Local Group Policy Editor. To do this, click Win+Rtype gpedit.mscand click on Enter button. After opening Group Policy, navigate to the following path:

For Excel:

User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Excel 2016 > Excel Options > General

For word:

User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Word 2016 > Word Options > General

For PowerPoint:

User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft PowerPoint 2016 > PowerPoint Options > General

Here you can find a setting called Enable Live Preview. You need to double click on this option and select Enabled option to enable live preview and Disabled option to turn off live preview.

Press OK button to save changes. If the application was running when you made the changes, you will need to restart it.

How to enable or disable preview in Word, Excel, PowerPoint using the registry

To enable or disable preview in Word, Excel, PowerPoint using the registry, follow these steps.

  1. Search regedit > click on an individual search result.
  2. Press Yes button.
  3. Switch to office > 16.0 in HKCU.
  4. Right click 0 > Create > Keyand call it like Excel/Word/Powerpoint.
  5. Right click excel/word/powerpoint > New > Keyand call it like options.
  6. Right click options > New > DWORD Value (32-bit).
  7. Set name as preview.
  8. Double click on it to set the data value.
  9. To come in one turn on and 0 disable.
  10. Press Ok button and close all windows.
  11. Restart your computer.

To get started, find regedit in the search box on the taskbar, click an individual search result and click the icon Yes button to open the registry editor.

Then follow this path:

Right click 16.0 > New > Key and call it like word, excel or power point.

Then right click this key, select New > Key and call it like options.

After that right click options > New > DWORD (32-bit) Value and call it live preview.

Default value data 0. If you want to disable Live Preview, leave it like that. If you want to enable live preview, double click this REG_DWORD value and set the given value as one.

Press OK button, close all windows and restart your computer.

How to enable preview in Excel?

To enable live preview in Excel, you need to follow any of the above guides. In any Office application, you can enable or disable real-time preview using the built-in Options Panel, the Local Group Policy Editor, and the Registry Editor. You can go to File > Options > General. Then mark Enable live preview check the box to enable preview in Excel.

How to enable preview in Word?

To enable Preview in Word, you can take the help of the Local Group Policy Editor. To do this, open GPEDIT and navigate to this path: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Word 2016 > Word Options > General. Then double click on Enable live preview setting and select Included option. Press Ok button to save changes.
