How to use the “Column” and “Columns” functions in Excel

Functions are an important part of Excel and help in the calculation of many data for many users. Columnsand columnss are the search and link functions in Microsoft Excel.

column function returns the column number of the link, and its formula Column([reference]).
Column Function Syntax:

Column

reference: The cell or range of cells or range of cells for which you want to return the column number. It’s not obligatory.

columns function returns the number of columns in the link, and its formula Columns(array).
Syntax of the Columns function:

columns

array: An array or array formula, or a cell range reference that requires the number of columns. Required.

How to use the Excel column function

launch Microsoft Excel.

Type in cell A1, =Column().

Then click To come in.

You will notice that the cell will return the number of the cell containing the formula.

Type in any of the cells in your spreadsheet = Column(D4).

Then press Enter and the result is 4 because the D column number is 4.

Type in any of the cells in your spreadsheet =Column(=COLUMN(F1:H5).

Then click To come inand the result will be 6,7 and 8.

There are two other methods for using the Column function.

method one is to click on FX button in the upper left corner of the Excel worksheet.

An Insert Function will appear.

Inside the dialog box in the section Select a CategoryChoose Search and link from the list.

In chapter Select a Functionchoose Column function from the list.

Then click OK.

BUT Function Arguments a dialog box will open.

in Link input field, enter cell F1:H5.

Then click OK.

method two is to click on Formulas tab and click Search and link button in Function Library Group.

Then select Column from the dropdown menu.

BUT Function Arguments will open.

Follow the same method as in Method 1.

Then click Ok.

How to Use the Excel Columns Function

Enter in any of the cells =COLUMNS(D1:E8).

Then click To come in.

The result is 2 because that’s the number of columns in the link.

Type in any of the cells in your spreadsheet =COLUMNS(1,2,3,4,5).

Then press Enter and the result is 5 because that gives the number of columns for the array constant.

There are two other methods for using the Columns function.

Then click OK.

Follow the same method as in Method 1.

Then click Ok.

What is a column in Excel?

In Microsoft Excel, a column runs horizontally and appears as a heading in alphabetical order at the top of the spreadsheet. There can be 16,384 columns in total in an Excel spreadsheet. The data goes from top to bottom.

How to write in a column in Excel?

If you want to insert a column in Excel, click on the column and click “Insert” from the context menu. A column will appear. To enter text below a column heading, click the row below the column and enter your details.
