What features and improvements await users of the new Linux kernel?

Linus Torvalds, father of the operating system linux, officially announced the release of a new version of the Linux 6.4 kernel. This release comes after two months of intensive development and includes many new features, improvements and updates for various Linux distributions.

One of the key updates is support for Intel LAM (Liniar Address Masking), which ensures more efficient use of resources. Linux 6.4 also includes custom trace events, LoongArch support for the nolibc library, zoned block device support for the F2FS file system, and support for the Svnapot extension and hibernation for the RISC-V architecture.

Linux 6.4 provides improvements to the io_uring subsystem, now allowing multiple simultaneous direct writes to a file. This feature is currently supported by EXT4 and XFS file systems. Added support for Fair and Weighted Fair Queuing (WFQ) schedulers for Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP), and implemented a new netlink-based API.

For developers, the increased use of the Rust language in the Linux kernel may be of particular interest. Improvements include the ‘ARef’ type used in wrappers for C types, the pin-init core API to facilitate safe pinned struct initialization, and other features.

Other changes include a new Qualcomm QAIC DRM driver for their Cloud AI, support for virtual NMIs on x86 AMD in KVM, support for new MMIO models (T2 Macs), Intel Sierra Forest EDAC, improved BIG TCP performance, and a new type of BPF netfilter program.

Particular attention should be paid to improvements for the Steam Deck gaming device, which includes an AMD “Van Gogh” APU. The Linux 6.4 kernel introduces additional power features for this device. In addition, version 6.4 has support for disk hibernation and suspension for RISC-V tablets and laptops.

The XPad kernel driver now supports the Xbox TurtleBeach REACT-R and Turtle Beach Recon controllers, making it easier to play on Linux. The new kernel version also makes it easier to use Linux on Lenovo Yoga convertible laptops with support for the Lenovo Yoga laptop series, including the Yoga C940 and the Ryzen-powered Ideapad Flex 14API.

Finally, Linux 6.4 includes new drivers for the StarFive JH71x0 temperature sensor and StarFive JH7110 RISC-V SoC, Acbel FSB032 power supply, Aquacomputer Aquastream XT pump, and ROG STRIX Z390-F GAMING motherboard.

Overall, the new version of the Linux 6.4 kernel represents a significant step forward in the development of Linux, bringing many innovations and improvements to a wide range of users and developers.
