Microsoft Gives Customers Free Security Tools After Massive Hack Attack

The company admitted that it screwed up with the protection of the data of its customers.

Microsoft Corp has announced that it is expanding its suite of free security tools for customers. This came after criticism that Microsoft was charging for protection against its own bugs.

Microsoft’s decision stems from a massive hack that allowed alleged Chinese spies to steal the emails of high-ranking US officials, as well as complaints from security experts and lawmakers about paid tools.

In published in Wednesday post in a blog post, Microsoft said the advanced features in its audit suite – which it calls Microsoft Purview – will be available to all customers “over the coming months”.

While these tools are not sufficient to prevent hacker attacks, they are critical for organizations to understand if there are intruders on their network, how they got there, and how to get them out.

Microsoft’s past practice of charging for advanced versions of these tools has drawn widespread criticism, especially in the wake of the recently uncovered hack on the US Foreign and Trade Departments. This attack – which Microsoft later admitted to be related to a security breach and coding errors – was only discovered because one of the victims noticed an anomaly while browsing their digital logs.

In a statement released alongside the Microsoft post, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency spokesman Eric Goldstein said “everyone wins” when security tools are provided for free.

Charging for these tools “is a recipe for lack of visibility when investigating cyber incidents,” Goldstein said.
