Millennials in panic: AI threatens their wallets

Most Gen Ys are worried that AI will take their jobs and paychecks.

82% of millennial workers (those born between 1981 and 1996) are concerned that artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to lower pay for the same position. This is higher than the average for all respondents (78%). Such data received in the course of a survey conducted by the Checkr HR platform.

The survey was conducted among 3,000 American workers of four generations at the end of April this year. It is part of a report called “American Workers Opinions.”

Sarah Korolevich, Head of Digital Content at Checkr, says millennials are caught in the middle. “While Gen Z is considered digital native and boomers and Gen X are starting to leave the job market, even the oldest millennials still have at least another 20 years of work to do, leaving them vulnerable to the potentially wide-ranging changes that this technology could bring,” she says.

To avoid being replaced by AI, 77% of millennials said they were willing to spend their own money to improve their AI knowledge and skills. This is also higher than the average for all respondents (72%).

Korolevich notes that “historically, technological disruptions and changes of this magnitude have always been met with anxiety and uncertainty.” “The advent of generative AI and language models is no exception, so it’s no surprise that US workers fear how this technology will change how they work and even how much they get paid. However, it is shocking how many people feel this way,” she says.
