What is Msmdsrv?

Msmdsrv.exe is related to Microsoft SQL Server and is a component of SSAS, which is nothing but SQL Server Analysis Services. You can find multiple instances of the process running on your system, as for each instance, a separate component is created.

If you use Microsoft Power BI, this service will run on your system. Sometimes, when something is wrong with Power BI, you can get a Msmdsrv.exe error. Hereinafter, we will check how to deal with that situation.

The file size of Msmdsrv.exe is in the range of  2 to 14 MBs and is located at the following location.

  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Analysis Services\Bin
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Power BI Desktop\Bin

Fix Msmdsrv.exe high CPU and Memory usage and Application Error

If Msmdsrv.exe causes high CPU and Memory usage or causes Application errors, follow the solutions mentioned below.

  1. Make sure that the process is not a virus
  2. Install the latest version of Visual Studio C++ Redistributable
  3. Increase your system’s memory
  4. Repair Power BI

Let us talk about them in detail.

1] Make sure that the process is not a virus

First of all, we need to ensure that the process running on your system is not a virus. To do the same, open Task Manager and right-click on Status. Now, select Publisher from the context menu. Once the Publisher column is added, check who’s the publisher of Msmdsrv.exe. If it’s Microsoft, then move to the next solution.

However, if it says,  Unable to verify or something else, it is very likely that the process is a virus. In that case, you can use an antivirus or scan using the Microsoft Security app.

2] Install the latest version of Visual Studio C++ Redistributable

In case the Msmdsrv.exe file present on your computer is not malicious, you need to proceed further with your troubleshooting. And the first one is installing the latest version of Visual Studio C++ Redistributable. The tool is already installed on your computer; it’s just that it’s not updated. Hence, we need to update. To do the same, just install the latest version of Visual Studio C++ Redistributable.

 3] Increase your system’s memory

Memory is the ability of your system to hold onto a running application. If your system has low memory, it won’t be able to hold demanding apps and they will crash. Since Power BI is a demanding application, it needs memory. It is one of the reasons why you get a Msmdsrv Application Error. So, if you can, install more memory to your system. But if that’s too much for you, at least increase the Virtual Memory. Follow the steps mentioned below to do the same.

  1. Search out “Advanced System Settings” from the Start Menu.
  2. Now, click on Settings from the Performance section.
  3. Then go to the Advanced tab.
  4. Click on the Change button from the Virtual Memory section.
  5. Disable Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
  6. Click on Custom size and set the parameters as the data mentioned below.
    • Initial size: 2 x RAM (Megabytes (MB) binary)
    • Final size: 4 x RAM (Megabytes (MB) binary)
  7. Finally, click Apply > Ok.

Note: If your RAM is 8 GB, multiply it by 1024 to convert it into MB, so, it should be 8192.

Finally, reboot your system and check if the issue is resolved.

4] Repair Power BI

You will get the Application Error when the Power BI app itself is corrupted. In that case, you need to repair the app. To do the same, follow the steps mentioned below.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps > Installed Apps or Apps & Features.
  3. Search for Microsoft Power BI.
    • Windows 11: Click on the three dots and select Advanced Options.
    • Windows 10: Select the app and then click on Advanced Options.
  4. Now, click on Repair.

Let it be repaired and check if the issue is resolved.

We hope that you can resolve the issue using the solutions mentioned in this post.
