The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced the completion of the assembly of the Wide Field Instrument (WFI) camera for the Nancy Grace Roman space telescope. The launch of the observatory is scheduled for the end of spring 2027.

What is known

The camera is equipped with a 288MP multispectral image sensor. It consists of 18 matrices. The resolution of each is 16.8 MP. The camera was assembled by a group of specialists from Ball Aerospace in Colorado.

WFI will allow you to get large images of the sky in the infrared range. Thanks to the new Nancy Grace Roman camera, it will see 100 times more than the Hubble Orbiting Telescope. The level of detail will remain the same.

It remains for engineers to install cooling systems. The operating temperature of the image sensors should be -178 degrees Celsius. Without this, the space telescope will not be able to receive light from distant galaxies and stars. To remove and dissipate heat, it will be necessary to stop the array of radiators.

After work on the cooling system is completed, the telescope will have to undergo a series of thermal vacuum tests. They are scheduled for this summer. The WFI camera will then be integrated into the Nancy Grace Roman space observatory. This procedure is scheduled for spring 2024. NASA will send Nancy Grace Roman into space in May 2027.
