Norway to buy 54 modernized Leopard 2A8 NOR tanks worth almost $2 billion with EuroTrophy active protection and ICS/CORTEX data exchange system

Norway will join Czech Republic with Germany and will also acquire upgraded Leopard 2A8 NOR tanks. Deliveries will begin in a few years.

What is known

The Norwegian version of the main battle tank will not differ much from the usual Leopard 2A8 for the German armed forces. The Norwegian Defense Material and Technical Agency (Norwegian Defense Materiel Agency, NDMA) and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) agreed on the specifications of the combat vehicle after a contract was signed in the first quarter of 2023.

Leopard 2A8 NOR will receive the EuroTrophy active protection system. One of the innovations will be the appearance of an integrated ICS/CORTEX system developed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg. It is designed to provide communication and data exchange with other combat vehicles.

In accordance with the requirements of the Norwegian authorities, the Leopard 2A8 NOR will receive an upgraded protection system. The tank will have modular armor. This will allow you to easily and quickly change damaged or outdated armor blocks. Also, the combat vehicle will have a mine protection kit made in Norway.

The deal amounted to $1.9 billion. The agreement includes an option to purchase another 18 tanks. Deliveries of Leopard 2A8 NOR combat vehicles will begin in 2026 and will last for five years.
