Rolls-Royce tests 67 MW UltraFan engine that runs on clean SAF fuel and could save billions of dollars in fuel costs

In December 2022 we wrote about the new Rolls-Royce engine. It’s called UltraFan. This year, the British giant has tested the power plant and has now reported on the test results.

What is known

Rolls-Royce has placed the new engine at the Testbed 80 test center in Derby. According to the manufacturer, UltraFan proved to be at least 10% efficient of any existing aircraft engine. So far, this title belongs to the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB.

The company believes the new powertrain will save billions of dollars in fuel costs. UltraFan has a capacity of 67 MW, i.e. about 87,000 horsepower. The diameter of the engine is more than three meters.

Rolls-Royce says the UltraFan will be able to deliver up to 45.5 tons of thrust and will cut fuel consumption by about a quarter compared to the Trent 700. The new engine runs exclusively on sustainable aviation fuel SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel).

UltraFan has already been certified, and it will appear in aircraft in the next decade. At the same time, the company intends to use technologies in existing engines to reduce emissions.
