Samsung Recently introduced the Samsung SSD 980 PRO, the company’s first commercial PCIe 4.0 NVMe solid-state drive (SSD). The Korean giant said in an official press release that it is built for professionals and customers who want high-end PCs, workstations, and game consoles to achieve cutting-edge performance.
Samsung says all the main components of the 980 PRO have been developed by its in-house engineers, including the customised Elpis controller, V-NAND and DRAM.
The company claims that the 980 PRO can deliver up to 7,000 MB / s and 5,000 MB / s sequential read and write speeds, respectively, as well as up to 1,000 K IOPS random read and write speeds, making it up to two times faster than PCIe 3.0 SSDs and up to 12.7 times faster than SATA SSDs.

For enhanced reliability, the 980 PRO series also comes with improved thermal control. While most high-performance NVMe SSDs today rely on external copper heatsinks to disperse heat, Samsung’s 980 PRO uses a nickel coating on the controller for efficient heat dissipation as well as a heat spreader mark on the back, “the company said in an official statement”.
To further push down temperatures even under extreme workloads, the SSD also integrates Samsung’s patented Dynamic Thermal Guard technology.
The Samsung SSD 980 PRO comes with capacities of 250 GB, 500 GB, and 1 TB and will be available worldwide beginning this month. By the end of this year, the company also expects to launch a 2 TB model. Both models will have a limited five-year warranty.
