Scientists have discovered rock vapors on an ultra-hot Jupiter not far from us, which became famous for raining metal

There are planets in our universe that are classified as ultra-hot Jupiters. One can guess that this is due to the huge size and high temperatures. One of these planets is called WASP-76 b and again attracted the attention of scientists.

What is known

WASP-76 b is a planet in the constellation Pisces. It is located at a distance of about 634 light years from Earth, which is minuscule by space standards, and is distinguished by the presence of metallic rains. They occur due to the fact that the temperature on the planet reaches 2400 degrees Celsius, causing the metals to first evaporate and then spill onto the surface.

Scientists managed to detect on WASP-76 b several chemical elements from which stones are formed at once. In particular, iron, magnesium, manganese, barium, calcium, chromium and vanadium. Moreover, their content corresponds to the content of these elements both in the local star and in the Sun.

In addition, astronomers believe that WASP-76 b previously swallowed a planet resembling Mercury from our star system. An excess of nickel led scientists to such conclusions.

As we wrote above, WASP-76 b is located 634 light years from Earth. The high temperature is due to the fact that the planet is located 12 times closer to its star than Mercury is to the Sun. The orbital period is less than 48 Earth hours.

Due to the proximity to the star, the planet swells. For this reason, it is approximately twice the diameter of Jupiter and immediately six times as large. However, the solar system gas giant is over 15% more massive than WASP-76 b.
