Signal founder: even Facebook is safer than Telegram

Pavel Durov’s messenger has become a popular alternative to WhtsApp and Viber due to its simplicity and security. But, the founder of the also popular secure messenger Signal Moxie Marlinspike believes that such a reputation of the messenger is too exaggerated.

Marlinspike said messages sent via Telegram are stored on the company’s servers in plain text without any encryption to protect the data.

The head of Signal noted that in this regard, even Messenger and WhatsApp from Meta (formerly Facebook) provide privacy better than Telegram. Both of these programs offer at least end-to-end encryption for all text messages sent through their platforms.

In turn, Telegram saves all data in the cloud in a completely open format: texts, general multimedia data, contacts. Even Facebook Messenger offers a minimum standard end-to-end encryption protocol for data stored on servers. In the case of Telegram, everyone who has access to its services also has access to the entire database of unprotected data of messenger users.

The Winfuture resource, the first to report this, claims that the Telegram program is essentially an open window to servers that store the entire history of everything that happened on the platform, visible to the private user, as well as to the server operators. If, for example, a hacker decides to start spying on a user’s private messages in Telegram, he can easily do it. Although it should be noted that Telegram has secret chats, where maximum information encryption is applied.

How Durov reacted to these statements is not yet known.
