The recently released Housemarque patch for Returnal, which allows players to pause their runs in a roguelike game, can obviously do much more than just let players take a break. Players have found that the newly added feature can be used to save progress, allowing for an easy reload midway through an ongoing run.

The developer added the ability for players to pause their runs for the last week only. A punishment-like game with runs that can last over three hours required long periods of time from players prior to the patch. If the PS5 it is running on Returnal, was turned off or put into rest mode before adding the patch, all progress in the current player launch will be lost.

However, by pausing execution and then uploading their current save to the cloud, Returnal players can effectively create an in-game save state. If they do end up dying, players can log out of the game, load their save from the cloud, and resume the game exactly where they paused the game.

While the workaround makes it easy for players to get through Returnal, there is one major caveat. To use the exploit at all, players need to have a PS + subscription, which gives them access to cloud storage on the PS5.

Following the launch of Returnal and positive reactions to the game, Sony acquired the developer, initiating a series of acquisitions that now include Nixxes Software, a PC port specialist and remake developer. Demon’s Souls, Bluepoint Games
