Top 5 cryptocurrency thefts in 10 years - since 2011 cybercriminals have stolen more than $ 12 billion

Since the beginning of 2011, hackers have been able to steal over $ 12 billion in cryptocurrencies. Over the past 10 years, the largest damage was caused to the PlusToken, Thodex, Poly Network, Mt.Gox and Wotoken exchanges – from $ 614 million to $ 2.9 billion.

What is known

According to Crystal Blockchain, 226 cryptocurrency crimes have been recorded since January 2011. The most popular way to steal funds has become a security breach. The share of such cases was approximately 53% (120 out of 226), and the damage was $ 3.18 billion out of $ 12.1 billion.

The theft of cryptocurrency from the Japanese exchange Coincheck is noted separately. The incident took place three years ago. Then the attackers were able to withdraw cryptocurrency worth about $ 535 million. Until now, this robbery is the largest in the digital currency industry.

Another $ 1.76 billion was stolen as a result of hacker attacks on decentralized financial services. Over 10 years, 73 cases (33.63%) were recorded.

In 33 cases out of 220, project organizers disappeared with investors’ money. Despite the fact that the share of this type of fraud was less than 15%, the damage is equal to $ 7.12 billion, i.e. more than 50% of all funds stolen over 10 years.

Cryptocurrency projects in the United States are the most affected by cybercriminals. The top three also include the UK and South Korea.
