US Air Force could order more than one B-21 Raider nuclear bomber in 2024 if Congress approves .3 billion funding request

The draft budget for fiscal year 2024 suggests an increase in spending on the creation of a nuclear bomber B-21 Raider. The first contract could be signed as early as 2023.

What is known

The B-21 Raider was announced in late 2022. Recently, the US Air Force published new photos of a strategic aircraft, the features of which are kept in strict confidence. The service wants an additional $673 million for the program, which will increase total funding for the next fiscal year to $2.3 billion.

A U.S. Air Force spokesman said this would allow “more than one” aircraft to be ordered. At the same time, he refused to specify how many bombers the service could buy. The Air Force spokesman added that the amount will include the purchase of spare parts, pilot training and the purchase of parts for future production batches.

Northrop Grumman formerly declared, which hopes to win the first contract for the B-21 Raider at the end of calendar year 2023. The US Air Force does not comment on this and claims that first you need to wait for the first flight, which is also scheduled for 2023.

The Air Force wants to avoid the problems associated with concurrency. This term should be understood as a situation where purchases are still at the development stage. The fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter suffered from this. Therefore, the service wants Northrop Grumman to fully complete the development of the aircraft, eliminate all problems, and only then can proceed to purchases.
