WhatsApp gives you a second chance… but only for 15 minutes and only for your messages
The instant messaging service follows the example of Telegram and Signal and introduces a message editing feature.
WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging service used by 2 billion people worldwide, has announced a new feature that will allow users to edit sent messages within 15 minutes of sending them. This innovation brings WhatsApp closer to competitors such as Telegram and Signal, which already offer a similar feature.
The new feature will be available to all WhatsApp users in the coming weeks. The biggest market for the service is India, where it has 487 million users.
“From fixing a simple typo to adding extra context to a message, we’re excited to give you more control over your chats,” the service said in a statement. To edit a message, the user will simply need to hold down the sent message and select “Edit” from the menu within fifteen minutes of sending it.
WhatsApp’s announcement follows the introduction of message editing features on other instant messaging services such as Telegram and Signal.
The editing function has been introduced by the social platform Facebook almost ten years ago. At the time, Facebook reported that more than half of its users were accessing the site from mobile phones, which are more prone to typing errors. On Facebook, posts that have been modified are marked as edited. The history of edits is also available for viewing by users.
Last year, Elon Musk’s social platform Twitter announced that it was giving its paying followers the ability to edit their tweets. Tweets can be edited multiple times within 30 minutes of posting. “Tweeting will feel more accessible and less stressful,” Twitter said in a blog post at the time. “You should be able to participate in a conversation in a way that makes sense to you, and we will continue to work on ways that will do this effortlessly,” the platform added.
