The extension comes in very handy when you want to quickly share a URL with the people around you. Tone can be used during a presentation or demo when you need to share a URL with an audience. Tone cannot send information to phones yet, but we hope it will be available soon. For now, you can only broadcast URLs to nearby computers that have the Tone extension installed in Google Chrome.

The extension is easy to use. Just install the extension from the Chrome Web Store and wait until a blue speakerphone icon appears next to the address bar. Once it appears, you can click on this icon to share the URL from your browser with neighboring computers. Remember that for Google Tone to work; you must have headphones or earphones disconnected or unplugged. As soon as you click the button, you will be able to hear the sound from your computer, which has the URL embedded in it. It is recommended to use this extension when there is less background noise.

Also, if Google Tone has successfully submitted the URL, the blue speaker icon will turn green, otherwise it will turn red. For this to work properly, the microphone must be turned on and Google Tone must be able to hear itself.

On the recipient side, you will see a small notification that the URL has been broadcast. You can click to open this notification and you will be redirected to the URL sent via audio. The extension will not automatically open the URL for you so you are protected from any malicious links that might be sent via audio.

URLs are generic as if they were in text media. Session information or saved credentials are not transmitted, only plain text URL is transmitted in audio.

Google Tone is a great extension that uses the very best in technology. Also, when you send something using sound, it is similar to how you speak.
