Denmark allocates 7 million to purchase small cold-resistant drones for day and night operations

The Danish Ministry of Defense wants to acquire two types of drones that will be able to perform night and day operations. But there are a few important requirements for drones.

What is known

Both unmanned aerial vehicles must be compact so that they can be transported in cars. One of the main requirements is frost resistance, since drones will have to perform tasks in low temperatures (down to -40 degrees Celsius / 14 degrees Fahrenheit). Also, UAVs must be protected from cyber attacks and electronic warfare.

The Danish Ministry of Defense, when choosing a drone, will take into account the flight time, range and data transfer rate. In particular, it is noted that the drone must remain in the air for at least 8 hours, and the flight range must be from 90 km.

Denmark has previously experimented with different types of compact UAVs, but has never used large drones like MQ-9 Reaper. Such platforms are expensive and require a developed infrastructure.

In turn, Denmark has territorial claims near the Faroe Islands and in the north of Greenland. In these regions, infrastructure is practically non-existent. Therefore, the Scandinavian country is considering vertical takeoff and landing drones that do not need runways.

The tender involves the purchase of drones for reconnaissance, so they must be equipped with cameras, thermal imagers and laser target indicators. Denmark allocates $ 107 million for the purchase of UAVs. The tender will end on March 23.
