EU to launch four test centers to develop responsible AI

EU members, the European Commission and 128 partners will allocate 220 million euros to establish four new test and experiment centers (TECs) to ensure the development of reliable AI.

What is known

The centers are physical and virtual facilities where AI-based software and hardware technologies can be tested in real-life conditions.

The ETC will also act as a “safety filter” between new digital technologies and citizens, providing a responsible and society-ready approach to building robust artificial intelligence.

Each center focuses on a specific sector with a high level of impact. These include:

  • production;
  • healthcare;
  • agriculture and food;
  • cities and communities.

The centers are expected to inform policy makers and facilitate the implementation of the AI Act by supporting regulatory sandboxes and enabling cooperation with national authorities.

The start of operation of the CTE is scheduled for January 2024. The first services will be launched in July 2023.
