Most people think that shutting down a laptop and putting it to sleep are the same processes, and to some extent they are, but when the computer is in sleep mode, all its running processes are saved in RAM, and when it is turned off, they are completely abandoned. Another difference is that hibernation on your PC is automated. This helps to conserve battery life without interrupting any tasks. You can also adjust the intervals at which your computer should go to sleep, but some users have reported errors with their sleep timer. They experienced that even though the timer was set, the computer did not go into sleep mode. Today we will discuss how to fix this problem if you are facing this problem.

Sleep timer not working in Windows 11/10

There are 4 ways to implement this fix if the sleep timer is not working:

  1. Check your sleep timer settings
  2. Use a power troubleshooter
  3. Prevent devices from waking your computer
  4. Use Command Prompt to Check Power Requests

1]Check the sleep timer settings.

If you find that the sleep timer is not working the way you configured it, the first thing you should do is check the timer settings in the control panel.

  • Click the search icon on the taskbar and open the control panel.
  • Here click Hardware and Sound> Power Options.
  • In the options bar on the left, select Choose When To Turn Off The Display.
  • You will see setting options for when to put your computer to sleep, both while charging and in battery standby.
  • Save the settings as you like and exit the Control Panel.

It is possible that these settings were messed up, in which case it will fix your error.

2]Use the power troubleshooter

The second solution to this problem is to use the Windows Power troubleshooter. Microsoft offers troubleshooters for some of the most commonly used utilities to help you fix them quickly. Here’s how you can use the Power Troubleshooter.

  • Press the Windows key + I keyboard shortcut to open Windows Settings.
  • Scroll down a bit and click on the “Troubleshoot” option.
  • Choose other troubleshooters
  • Find the power troubleshooter and click the Run button next to it.

If there is any system error related to your power settings, you will receive a notification and the opportunity to fix it.

3]Do not allow devices to wake up the computer.

Devices such as a mouse or keyboard wake up your computer when activated. So you can also try disabling this setting for them. We’ll show you how you can disable your mouse so it doesn’t interfere with your computer’s sleep.

  • Click the search icon on the taskbar and search for “Device Manager”.
  • In the list of devices currently active on your computer, click Mice and Other Pointing Devices.
  • Select the mouse you are currently using and expand its properties.
  • Click the Power Management tab at the top and uncheck the box next to Allow this device to wake this computer.

4]Use the command line to check power requests.

Sleep timer not working on Windows

Another very likely reason for your computer to wake up from hibernation is power requests that might be sent by services. You can use the command line to find out which services are keeping your computer awake and then disable the ones you think you don’t need. Here’s how:

  • Find Command Prompt in the search option on the taskbar and select Run as Administrator.
  • When the prompt window opens, paste the following line of code there and hit enter:
powercfg /requests
  • The result will be something like the one shown in the picture below:

As you can see, none of my processes are currently requesting power.

Is hibernation bad for your PC?

People often worry about whether hibernation is better or worse than shutting down the computer. While hibernation is easier since all you have to do is close the lid, shutting down helps your computer perform self-tests, clear RAM, and alert you to software updates.

Does sleep drain your battery?

While yes, it consumes battery when in sleep mode, it’s pretty minimal. In hibernation mode, your computer is in a low power state where power is used only to keep the computer’s state in memory. Startup after entering sleep mode is very fast, but this sudden power return requires a significant amount of power.
