Germany will give Ukraine 12 short-range IRIS-T SLS anti-aircraft missile systems

Since the fall of last year, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been using IRIS-T SLM medium-range anti-aircraft missile systems. IRIS-T SLS will soon join them.

What is known

The SLS version is a short range air defense system. It is better known as RBS-98. It is under this name that the complex is in service with the Swedish army, where the tracked armored car BvS 10 is used as a chassis.

IRIS-T SLM can intercept targets at altitudes up to 20 km and at ranges up to 40 km. The complex includes several launchers and a radar station. In the case of the SLS version, everything was able to fit into one machine.

IRIS-T SLS is intended for close range protection. The interception range of air threats is up to 12 km, and the maximum height is 8 km. The system uses an IRIS-T missile with an infrared guidance head. By the way, the modification of the missile for launching from a ground launcher is equipped with a more powerful engine than the air-based version.

The complex can intercept fighter jets, attack helicopters, anti-radar and cruise missiles, large-caliber missiles, guided bombs and unmanned aerial vehicles. Which version of the IRIS-T SLS will go to Ukraine is still unknown.

What we do know is that Diehl is working on a variant of the Mk III based on a wheeled chassis rather than a tracked one. This increases the mobility of the system. And yes, the website of the German government states that Germany will send 12 IRIS-T SLS anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine.
