How to boot or repair a Windows computer from installation media

This post will show you how to repair Windows 11/10 installation using bootable installation USB or DVD media without data loss. In a situation where troubleshooting options in Windows Advanced Settings are not available from Windows, you must use a USB or DVD media.

Restore your Windows computer using installation media

To repair a Windows 11/10 installation using a bootable USB or DVD installation media, follow these steps:

  1. Download Windows ISO
  2. Create bootable USB or DVD drive
  3. Boot from the media and select “Repair your computer”.
  4. In the Advanced Troubleshooting section, select Startup Repair.

If you can’t boot into Windows 11/10 and can’t access your files, Windows Startup Repair can fix some of the most common problems with an advanced recovery method. Your data will not be lost during the repair process.

1]Download Windows ISO

While not required, make sure you download the same Windows ISO that is installed on your computer. The Advanced Troubleshooter is independent of Windows version, but can come in handy when you need to install a fresh copy of Windows.

2]Create a bootable USB or DVD drive.

Once you get the ISO image, use one of the listed tools to create a bootable USB drive. Then boot into the BIOS or UEFI of your computer and select the USB device as the first boot device and then the hard drive. We recommend using Rufus as it can download ISO as well.

3]Boot from the media and select “Repair your computer”.

When you boot from the USB drive, the Windows 10 installation starts. Don’t be tempted to continue or you’ll have to install Windows. On the first installation screen, find the link “Repair your computer… ” Press here. This will boot your computer into Advanced Recovery.

4]In the Advanced Troubleshooting section

In advanced troubleshooting, select Advanced Options.

To choose Troubleshoot.

On the advanced options screen, you will see Startup Repair.

Click on it and follow the instructions.

This solution will fix issues that are preventing you from booting into your computer. The next screen will display the administrator account with its name. Click on it and confirm using the account password associated with the email associated with it.

Recover Windows 10 from installation media

After fixing the problem, the computer should restart as usual and you should be able to use it.

How to repair damaged Windows 11/10?

If you are unable to boot to Windows PC, i.e. you cannot access the login screen due to corruption, you can restore it using a bootable USB media. Once you have it, be sure to change the boot order to USB in BIOS or UEFI to boot from USB stick.

Although a normal Windows installation will appear, the Windows restore option appears in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. Then Advanced Recovery Mode will open.

Find Command Prompt in Tools and then run the following DISM Tools and System File Checker commands.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

SFC /scannow

Once the repair is complete, restart your computer and you should be able to boot into Windows. If there is no PC MBR, you can use bootrec / FixMbr

How to repair Windows 11/10 using the command line?

Similar to the above option, if you can log into Windows 10 and use it to restore Windows. This comes in handy when some of your system files are corrupted resulting in errors. Use DISM command and SFC to fix the problem. Teams will require administrator permission to perform and complete the repair.

How do I restore Windows 11/10 using USB?

This means that you need to create a bootable USB drive and then use it to boot into Advanced Recovery. Then use a command tool to run commands to fix any corrupted file that might be blocking the PC from booting normally. If you need to perform Startup Repair, this is the right way to do it.
