iFixit specialists dismantled the new MacBook Air: the laptop is still almost impossible to repair

At the beginning of the month at the WWDC 2023 conference, Apple introduced a new laptop – MacBook Air with 15.3-inch display and proprietary M2 processor. Most recently, it went on sale, and iFixit specialists have already managed to disassemble it and evaluate its maintainability.

What was shown

Inside, the new MacBook Air is very similar to the previous 13-inch model, but with two additional speakers. Its sound system consists of not four, but six speakers. The battery capacity is also slightly increased, but Apple says that the battery life of the 15-inch laptop is the same as that of the 13-inch.

The battery cells have adhesive tabs for easier removal, but the battery can only be accessed after several other components have been removed.

The teardown also shows a board with an M2 chip and a single NAND chip for the 256GB model, which can result in slower SSD read and write speeds compared to 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB models.

According to iFixit, repairing the MacBook Air is still a very difficult task, so the new version received only 3 points out of 10 for maintainability.
