The UK and France have been cooperating for several years under the Future Cruise / Anti-Ship Weapon (FC / ASW) program to create new missiles. Italy recently joined them.
What is known
The FC / ASW project is focused on the creation of an anti-ship missile to replace the Exocet / Harpoon and a cruise missile to replace the Storm Shadow / SCALP. Italy joined the program this week, officially announced at the Paris Air Show.
The decision was made public during a meeting between Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto and his French counterpart Sebastien Lecornu. After that, Italy, France and Great Britain signed the corresponding document.
The manufacturer of the new missiles will be MBDA. The ammunition will have three warheads. The weight of the main one will be 200 kg, and the two additional ones – 50 kg each. The missile will be able to hit targets at a maximum distance of 300 km.
The next generation rocket program has two goals. They consist in the creation of a subsonic stealth missile and a supersonic highly maneuverable missile. They will provide the ability to overcome ground and sea air defense systems.
