Microsoft built an expensive OpenAI supercomputer with thousands of processors
Cloud technology now supports artificial intelligence products for the company’s customers.
Microsoft built a unique supercomputer for a startup Open AIspecializing in the development of artificial intelligence, reports Bloomberg . According to Microsoft executive vice president Scott Guthrie, the project cost the company several hundred million dollars.
To build the computer, Microsoft used tens of thousands of A100 graphics chips from Nvidia and developed a new system architecture capable of operating and being reliable on a very large scale. This enabled OpenAI to launch ChatGPT, a popular AI-powered chatbot that attracted over 1 million users within days of its launch in November 2022.
Scott Guthrie, Microsoft Executive Vice President of Cloud and artificial intelligencedid not name the specific cost of the project, but said that “it is likely to exceed” several hundred million dollars.
Despite the success of ChatGPT, Elon Musk, one of the founders of OpenAI, said that Microsoft is gradually “capturing” OpenAI by funding projects of a startup working with artificial intelligence technologies. However, the development of OpenAI thanks to the Microsoft supercomputer continues, and the startup is already preparing new projects in the field of artificial intelligence.
