The American company Raytheon Technologies received a contract for the production and supply of smart bombs StormBreaker. The customer is the US Air Force.
What is known
Raytheon received $320 million to produce 1,500 smart bombs. Ammunition carriers are fourth-generation US Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle fighters. Bombs provide the aircraft with unprecedented capabilities against stationary and moving targets, regardless of conditions.
The GBU-53/B StormBreaker is a precision glide bomb formerly known as the Small Diameter Bomb II. Their production began in 2014. The bomb is equipped with a 48 kg warhead. It can hit stationary and moving targets at a distance of up to 110 km and 72 km, respectively.
In September 2020, the GBU-53/B StormBreakers were approved for combat use aboard the F-15E Strike Eagle. Smart bombs are now being tested on fifth-generation F-35B aircraft and carrier-based F/A-18 fighters.
