Ukrainian genius or villain? How he created and distributed the malicious code that deceived millions of people
The damage from the hacker is more than $70 million.
Spanish police have arrested a Ukrainian citizen who was issued a red 24-hour Interpol warrant at the request of the United States. He has been on the run from US justice for over 10 years, accused of creating and distributing malware known as scareware.
The arrest took place on Tuesday at Barcelona-El Prat airport, where the suspect flew to visit the city. The operation was attended by employees of the General Commissioner for Information, the Provincial Information Brigades of Tenerife and Barcelona, and the El Prat Airport Commissariat. At the international level, the operation was supported by the FBI and Interpol.
Scareware is a type of fraud in which attackers infect victims’ computers with a special code that displays messages that the device is infected with a virus and that you need to purchase antivirus software to eliminate it. Victims pay up to $129 for fake security software, unaware that they are giving away money to those who originally infected their computer.
According to the investigation, the detainee’s crimes affected hundreds of thousands of victims around the world and caused losses to consumers in the amount of more than $ 70 million.
On Wednesday morning, he was taken to the Central Court of Investigation Number Six of the National Auditorium, which ordered his detention.
