The US Army wants to receive more than a hundred Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) in 2024. Further development of the rocket is also planned.
What is known
PrSM is the missile that will replace ATACMS. It is designed for the M142 HIMARS highly mobile artillery rocket systems and the M270 MLRS multiple launch rocket systems.
The FY 2024 budget proposal calls for the purchase of 110 Increment 1 missiles with a launch range of 500 km for $384 million. By comparison, the ATACMS ballistic missile can hit targets up to 300 km away.
Lockheed Martin does not plan to stop at PrSM Increment 1. The American manufacturer will continue to develop the program. To do this, the US Army is asking Congress for $273 million for fiscal year 2024.
The main objective – increase the maximum launch range of PrSM to 1000 km. This was announced at the AUSA 2022 arms exhibition in Australia by a representative of Lockheed Martin. Such a range could be achieved with the advent of the PrSM Increment 4, but the future of the rocket is still uncertain. But 650 km is very realistic goal.
