A team of researchers from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (Switzerland) for 15 months spent an experiment with the participation of 14,733 people with the aim of finding out who is most often the victim of phishing lures.

The researchers sent fake phishing emails to participants’ regular work emails and made a dedicated button in the email client that made it easy to report suspicious emails.

Some of the results of this experiment contradict the recent research … For example, a user’s gender has nothing to do with the chance of becoming a victim of a phishing attack.

Younger and older people are more likely to click on phishing links, so age is a key factor.

Users who use specialized software for repetitive tasks are more likely to fall into the trap than those who do not need computers for their day-to-day work.

30.62% of participants who opened phishing bait soon clicked on suspicious emails again. 23.91% of participants who performed dangerous actions (enabling macros, submitting credentials) performed similar actions more than once.

Alerts for suspicious emails proved to be effective, but this effectiveness did not increase as the alerts became more detailed.

“Interestingly, contrary to previous research and industry practice, the combination of mock phishing and voluntary inline training (that is, employees were not required to undergo training) not only failed to improve employee resistance to phishing, but made them more vulnerable,” he explains. in a research article.

The study found that 90% of employees reported six or less suspicious emails. User phishing messages were accurate 68% of the time (up to 79% accurate when spam was also counted). 10% of phishing notifications were sent within 5 minutes of receiving the email, and 35% within 30 minutes.
