BAE and Rolls-Royce test ejection seat and engine for Europe’s first sixth generation Tempest fighter jet

The UK Department of Defense, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Leonardo UK, MBDA and a number of smaller companies are working on the creation of the sixth generation Tempest fighter. The work is carried out as part of the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP).

What is known

BAE Systems has tested the ejection seat, while Rolls-Royce is doing aerodynamic testing of the power plant. The air intake will have fewer moving parts to increase the stealth of the fighter.

In parallel with this, the pilots of the Royal Air Force of Great Britain are training on a specially designed simulator. They have already been able to fly more than 150 hours.

The sixth generation aircraft will receive new software for safety-critical systems. It will also be equipped with a modern radar capable of processing data streams comparable to the Internet traffic of a small city.

The Tempest will be the first European fighter of the sixth generation. It will appear in the middle of next year. At the same time, Chinese and American sixth-generation fighters should be ready.

But the second European aircraft of the next generation will be delayed for several years. We are talking about the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program, in which France, Germany and Spain take part.
