Boeing will create an experimental environmentally friendly aircraft based on the McDonnell Douglas MD-90 with very thin and extra long wings

Boeing will create an experimental aircraft for NASA. The development program received the identifier X-66A.

What is known

The creation of an experimental aircraft will take place as part of the US initiative to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The goal will be unattainable if the aviation sector cannot be decarbonized.

Boeing’s new aircraft will be based on the McDonnell Douglas MD-90. The use of very thin and extra long wings with props will reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%.

The fuselage will be shortened in the experimental aircraft, and new wings and engines will be installed. Boeing signed a contract for the development of a medium-haul aircraft, designed for 7 years.

The cost of the company’s agreement with the NASA space agency amounted to $425 million. At the same time, the entire project to create an experimental aircraft is estimated at $725 million. The rest will be financed by Boeing from its own funds and partners’ funds.
