Microsoft will add 3D avatars to Teams in May

Microsoft will still be adding 3D avatars to Teams for all Microsoft 365 subscribers as per the update roadmap. The feature was originally announced in 2021 and has been tested with a very limited circle of users all this time.

What is known

The idea behind 3D avatars is so that people who don’t like being in front of a camera or need a break from constant video calls can put an avatar in their place that will animate based on your voice.

“It’s not a binary so I can choose how I want to appear, be it a video or an avatar, and there are a lot of customizable options to choose how you want to attend the meeting,” says Katie Kelly, General Manager of Microsoft Mesh products, we can interpret your voice cues to bring this avatar to life, so that your conversation partners feel like you’re in a meeting.”

In the future, the company also plans to use these avatars for virtual meetings and has already partnered with Meta to develop the Teams client on Meta Quest.
