Launched the world’s first laser relay system.

NASA has launched a revolutionary in-space laser communications test mission that could provide faster, more reliable data transmission between satellites, the International Space Station (ISS) and Earth.

The mission, called the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD), uses infrared lasers to encode and transmit information to and from Earth at a rate of 1.2 gigabits per second. This is 10 to 100 times faster than the traditional RF systems that have been used for space communications since the dawn of space exploration.

Laser communication has a number of advantages over radio frequency communication, such as greater bandwidth, lower power consumption, smaller size and weight of equipment, as well as increased security and confidentiality of transmitted data.

The LCRD is installed on the STPSat-6 satellite, which was launched into geostationary orbit on December 5, 2021 by an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The satellite also carries other science and technology experiments for the US Department of Defense.

LCRD will test laser communications both between two satellites and between the ISS and Earth. To do this, it will use two optical terminals that can align and maintain the precise direction of laser beams over thousands of kilometers. It will also use two RF terminals for backup communication in case of adverse weather conditions or other interference.

LCRD is NASA’s first laser relay system in the world and is designed to prove the viability and effectiveness of laser communications for future space missions. NASA plans to use laser communications to transmit more data from scientific vehicles studying the Moon, Mars and other solar system objects.
