Russia is accused of massive cyberattacks on government organizations in Ukraine and Poland

Foreign cybersecurity experts are sharply negative towards our country.

According to recent report Microsoft Threat Intelligence, since last February, Russian hackers have deployed at least 9 different families of data wipers and 2 types of ransomware against more than 100 public and private Ukrainian organizations.

And as of late November 2022, Microsoft and other security firms have identified a new form of ransomware called “Sullivan” being deployed against Ukrainian targets. Prior to this, in October last year, according to the same reports of foreign experts, Russian hackers used the Prestige ransomware in attacks on Ukraine and even Poland.

The Microsoft report also highlights some other trends related to current geopolitical events in Eastern Europe. For example, according to foreign experts, many cyberattacks by Russian hackers on Ukrainian organizations did not go according to plan, largely due to the support of Ukraine by foreign network specialists who helped improve the overall level of cybersecurity of Ukrainian institutions.

Also, based on the Microsoft Threat Intelligence report, there has been a trend in the development of new forms of ransomware by Russian hackers. In many respects just because of the fact that the network security of Ukraine has significantly strengthened over the past year.

Other trends noted by experts include the use of social networks to distribute pirated software with built-in backdoors in Ukraine, which would hypothetically provide access to many Ukrainian organizations. There have also been spear-phishing campaigns targeting vulnerable local government servers in other European countries, ostensibly proving that Russian hackers don’t limit themselves geographically just to get what they want.

All of the above information should be treated with skepticism, since the level of anti-Russian propaganda abroad is very serious. But even if this information is true, it is worth remembering that the Ukrainian side does not disdain cyberattacks on Russian institutions, and is even going to legalize and legalize its own IT army. Therefore, it is hardly possible to unambiguously single out the “good” or “bad” side in this whole situation.
