Scientists have created an origami-like device that allows you to feel objects in virtual reality

Researchers from China have created a unique device that changes its shape and rigidity depending on how the user touches objects in VR.

Researchers in China have developed a new device for haptic interaction with virtual reality (VR), partly inspired by the art of origami paper craft. This is the device featured in the magazine Nature Machine Intelligence allows users to feel the softness or hardness of objects in the virtual space, as well as positive or negative tactile sensations.

The device works on the principle of a curved origami that changes its shape and rigidity depending on how the user touches or presses on it. Unlike other haptic feedback devices that only generate vibration or pressure in the palm of the hand, this device allows the user to actively explore various objects in VR, such as balls, cubes, flowers or planets.

The device synchronizes with virtual content and adapts its configuration to different interaction scenarios. For example, if the user wants to squeeze a ball in VR, the device becomes soft and deformable. If the user wants to feel the hardness of a cube or a planet, the device becomes hard and unyielding.

Quantitative evaluations have shown that the device creates a high level of immersion in VR and outperforms existing vibration-based devices. These concepts and technologies open up new possibilities and potential for a more realistic virtual world.
