UK uses artificial intelligence to detect foul language, explicit scenes and violence in films

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) will turn to artificial intelligence for help in assigning an age rating to films.

What is known

A new partnership with Amazon’s cloud computing division aims to teach an AI model to identify and flag “problematic content”. This includes profanity, dangerous behavior, sex, and violence.

The BBFC hopes the technology will help save time when classifying a movie or other video content. At the same time, AI will not replace professional employees, but will complement them.

Some aspects of the classification system, such as bad language, are fairly easy to automate. Nudity recognition has also been made possible by advances in computer vision in recent years.

However, AI is still difficult to train to pay attention to a number of categories, such as identifying dangerous behavior or violence.

What to expect?

In the future, they plan to teach the system to assign international age ratings. The idea is that streaming services will be able to receive approval to broadcast for several territories at once. This will help speed up and reduce the cost of classification.
