ISP RAS announces the creation of a consortium to study the security of the Linux kernel

Institute for System Programming of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISP RAS) announced on the formation of a consortium whose purpose will be to study the security of the kernel linux.

The main task of the consortium will be to organize cooperation between scientific institutions, universities and IT companies in the field of Linux kernel security research, as well as the development of the Russian branch of this kernel. The activities of the consortium will be carried out within the Linux Kernel Security Technology Research Center, which was established in 2021.

According with agreement on the formation of a consortium, its main task will be to increase the level of security of Russian operating systems and programs developed on the basis of the Linux kernel. The consortium will actively monitor the implementation of the principles of safe development and work to create an infrastructure for scientific and innovative activities. At the same time, it is planned to attract new participants to work on the security of the kernel.

In addition to working on vulnerabilities, the Technology Center is developing the Russian branch of the Linux kernel and synchronizing it with the main kernel. Among the partners of the center are such companies as Basalt SPO, Open Mobile Platform, Red Soft, RusBITech-Astra, Fintech, Yandex.Cloud and others.

To date, the Technology Center has made 154 fixes to the main core. The last batch of 100 fixes was added in February 2023. The average age of problems fixed is six years.
