Popular microblogging platform Twitter* is flooded with porn bots

Users turn directly to Elon Musk to fix this disgrace, but not everything is so simple …

Recently to Twitter many different claims regarding how the stability of the service and new policy Elon Musk, who wants to monetize what used to be free. However, one problem with Twitter is particularly acute – phishing automated accounts promoting adult content are common on the platform. They can write to site users both in private messages and reply to their tweets.

The surge in porn bots is somewhat ironic, given Elon Musk’s promising claims to crack down on bots and fake Twitter accounts following his acquisition of the platform.

This week, security researchers have tagged many spam-accounts that started following them, initiate unwanted direct messages and other interactions such as likes and replies.

Last week the research team MalwareHunterTeam discovered several Twitter accounts that are spam bots that inject themselves in the process of interaction in the form of likes. This is done in order to encourage users to view the profiles of these bots and follow the links provided in their bios. And these links, of course, lead to sex dating sites and various repositories of porn content.

American journalist Chris Heidner also publicly highlighted the response to his recent post, which he received from a pornbot within minutes of posting the material:

Responses from spambots

Mikel Garcia, a UK-based IT professional, posted a screenshot of several spambots advertising bogus baits including “part-time jobs” via the platform’s direct messages:

Mailing lists from bots and fake accounts

While Twitter suspends such accounts as they become available, the platform has yet to implement any effective or new proactive anti-spam and bot solutions to stop them from being active before they even interact with other users.

How Elon Musk will get out of this dangerous situation in terms of reputational risks is still unclear. After repeated loud statements that the platform will defeat spam bots, it becomes at least strange to watch their activity growing every day.

* The social network is prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation.
