Roskomnadzor “grounded” 12 foreign hosters

Hosting providers are required to open representative offices in Russia and interact with the authorities.

Roskomnadzor turned on V list of foreign persons operating on the Internet on the territory of the Russian Federation, 12 foreign hosting providers. Among them are Hetzner Online GmbH, Network Solutions, LLC, WPEngine, Inc., HostGator.com, LLC, Ionos Inc., DreamHost, LLC, FastComet, Inc., Amazon Web Services, Inc., GoDaddy.com LLC, Bluehost Inc. ., Kamatera Inc. and DigitalOcean, LLC.

This means that these companies are required to open a branch/representative office/Russian legal entity in Russia, place an electronic feedback form with Russian users on their website, and register a personal account on the Roskomnadzor website for prompt interaction with the authorities.

Such requirements are Federal Law No. 236-FZ “On the activities of foreign persons on the Internet in the territory of the Russian Federation”, which entered into force on July 1, 2021. The law is aimed at protecting the interests of Russian users and ensuring compliance with Russian legislation on the Internet.

In case of non-compliance with the requirements of the law, foreign hosters may be subject to administrative liability and restriction of access to their resources.
